TOPIC - AGRARIAN CRISIS AND RURAL DISTRESS IN INDIA

The 17th Annual Winter Conference took place on the 7th of February 2018 at Ramjas College. There was a panel discussion with the theme as "Agrarian Crisis and Rural Distress in India". The panelists were Mr. Roshan Kishore and Mr. Himanshu.

Mr Himanshu is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Economic Planning, School of Social Sciences Jawahar Lal Nehru University. Mr Roshan Kishore is a Data and Political Economy Editor at The Hindustan Times. The panel discussed how the agrarian crisis is not a new phenomenon and goes back many years. The audience engaged with the speakers when they explained the impact of cash transfers on the economy. Throughout the discussion, the problem of farmer suicides was addressed as a major failure of the system.

The discussion was followed by the paper presentation competition which saw papers of exceptional quality. Students from colleges from all over the country presented their research papers in front of a panel of esteemed judges. The award for the Best Paper was won by Anushka Sharma of Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi for her paper "Well Being - The Ultimate Goal".
